Vendor Selling Ploys

"To avoid costly mistakes, you've got to be able to spot vendor ploys."

Technology Acquisitions through the Deal Wheel

"The goal of the company should be to build its definition of success into the contract provisions."

How to Make Informed Corporate IT Acquisitions from a User's Perspective

"Technology acquisitions must always be linked to business improvement."

The Technical Assessment Process

"However comprehensive a new system seems, there are always loose ends, unresolved interface issues, and functionality gaps."

Financial Considerations in IT Acquisitions

"Business problems don't always need technology solutions, even in the Information Age."

Cost-Benefit Analysis of IT Projects

"As IT systems improve, the value of each improvement diminishes."

The Seven Deadly Negotiating Sins and How to Avoid Them

"If the company's negotiators don't control the process, the vendor's sales team will."

Administrative Components of IT Acquisitions

"Administration's dual role of identifying rules and auditing compliance with those rules is essential to efficient, orderly deployment of information technology."

Putting the Five Roles Together in Impacting IT Acquisitions

"The only reason to buy information technology is to improve the way a company does business."

Contracting Themes for IT Acquisitions

"Given that infringement can only be the result of wrongful conduct by the vendor, you want to be indemnified against all costs from all forms of intellectual property infringement."

The Role of Requests for Proposals in IT Acquisitions

"If done properly, the proposal will feed into the negotiating process, and the result will be a meaningful, adminstrable, risk-balanced contract tailored to fit the business needs of the customer."

Software Licenses

"Vendors find contractual ways to multiply your company's obligations and the limitations on your company's use of their software."

Rules and Protocols for Software Licensing

"The contractual "teeth" in a most favored nation provision will provide that in the event that the vendor offers more favorable terms to another company, those terms will also be offered to your company."

How IT Consultants Can Benefit Your Company

"Hiring a consultant gives the company the flexibility to seek a person with the single set of skills needed to accomplish the task."

Buy, Maintain, or Lease Computer Equipment

"Generally, only the vendor can keep its equipment running. Thus, your leverage disappears as soon as you buy the equipment."

Key Issues in Outsourcing

"To provide lower costs over the term of the outsourcing contract, outsourcing vendors invest in cost-saving technology, retrain employees, and add new processes."

Strategic Alliances with Vendors

"In a well-designed strategic alliance, sharing risks and rewards gives the vendor a strong incentive to act only in the company's best interest."
